KEY INGREDIENTS & THEIR BENEFITS
- Organic Demerara Sugar & Organic Cane Sugar: Sugar is a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the environment into the skin. So when you apply products with sugar or sugar derivatives, they'll actually help hydrate your skin and keep moisture within (1). A natural source of glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that penetrates the skin and breaks down the "glue" that bonds skin cells, removes dead skin cells, dirt, and oil that can clog and stretch pores encouraging cell turnover and generating fresher, younger-looking skin (1). Sugar's small particles make an excellent topical exfoliant. White sugar will yield a finer scrub, while a rougher sugar, like Demerara, will be more exfoliating (2).
- Butyrospermun parkii (Shea Butter): Naturally rich in vitamins A, E and F, it provides the skin with essential fatty acids and the nutrients necessary for collagen production (3). The concentration of natural vitamins and fatty acids in shea butter makes it incredibly nourishing and moisturizing for skin, and is often used to remedy dry skin and to help protect the skin’s natural oils (3). Due to its cinnamic acid content and other natural properties, shea butter has anti-inflammatory properties (4). One compound in particular, lupeol cinnamate, was found to reduce skin inflammation and even potentially help avoid skin mutations making it beneficial for people with acne (3). Shea butter aids in the skin’s natural collagen production and contains oleic, stearic, palmitic and linolenic acids that protect and nourish the skin to prevent drying and with long term use, many people report skin softening and strengthening as well as wrinkle reduction (3).
- Theobroma cacao (Cocoa Butter): Because of its natural make-up and its nutrient and fatty acid content, cocoa butter is amazing for dry skin and can actually penetrate further than the top layer of the skin, meaning it moisturises deep-down and really nourishes the skin (5). Cocoa butter can also be helpful for many skin problems like eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and skin irritation.
- Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin-E): Topical application of vitamin E oil promotes production of two important protein components namely, collagen and elastin that improves skin elasticity (6). This in turn reduces the appearances of the visible age spots, fine lines or wrinkles, and gives a younger-looking skin. Its antioxidant properties further fight off damaging effects of free radicals, and minimizes the chances of appearances of new wrinkles (6). Vitamin E also prevents water loss from the skin, and helps retain its natural moisture making dull, dry skin look healthy and well-moisturized (6).
- Olea europea (Extra Virgin Olive Oil): Full of linoleic acids, oleic acids, palmitic acids, and polyphenols, the acids in high quality olive oil work by trapping water into the skin, ensuring hydration (7). Polyphenols are antioxidants, which when absorbed into the skin, will combat the free radicals thus preventing premature ageing. Two other benefits of polyphenol is that is offers protection against ultraviolet rays and will also encourage new cell growth, so that new cells are made to replace any damaged skin cells (7).
- Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba Oil): Rich in vitamin E, B-complex, copper, zinc, selenium, iodine, and chromium, jojoba oil can seal in the moisture and create an effective barrier to external elements (8). Jojoba oil works in several ways to counteract acne formation: first, it acts as a deep cleanser by penetrating deep into the hair follicle dissolving the sebum deposits and helping dislodge the comedone, thus clearing out the blockage (8). Second, its antibacterial properties helps control bacterial growth in the hair follicle and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, soothing the irritated skin (9). When used regularly, jojoba oil can control acne: the Vitamins A and E in the oil also may have a role in this.
- Prunus dulcis (Sweet Almond Oil): Great moisturizer for skin, almond oil has a natural ability to plump and firm the skin (9). Helps in repairing, rejuvenating, as well as revitalizing damaged skin ensuring it is left feeling relaxed and looking great (10). (Learn more about the benefits of sweet almond oil HERE!).
- Wild Forest Honey: Honey is a natural beauty solution for all skin types because of its healing skin benefits. It does wonders for a wide variety of skin ailments including acne and enlarged pores, rosacea, eczema, hyperpigmentation, sensitive, mature, and dull lifeless skin (11). With its natural pH level of 4.5, raw honey falls within skin’s naturally healthy pH range. Its antiseptic and antimicrobial properties make it great for healing cuts and burns by killing bacteria and fungus (11). Raw honey also contains gluconic acid, a mild alpha hydroxy acid that brightens the complexion, evens out skin tone, and lightens scars and age spots (11). Rich in nutrients and minerals such as vitamin B, iron, manganese, copper, potassium and calcium, it acts as a humectant drawing moisture to the skin and is perfect as a gentle cleansing solution for even very sensitive skin (12). When mixed with water, honey releases peroxide properties which helps heal acne and impede bacterial growth causing more acne (11).
- Cinnamomum zeylanicum (Cinnamon Essential Oil): Its antibicrobial capacity is effective at treating skin conditions such as rashes, acne and infections (12).
- Citrus Sinensis (Sweet Orange Essential Oil): Orange essential oil is antiseptic and anti-inflammatory which makes it an ideal ingredient in your skin care products. This oil isn't just for acne-prone skin though: It's been shown to increase the ability to absorb vitamin C, collagen production, and blood flow, all of which are essential for anti-aging (13). Using skin products with sweet essential oil overtime can smooth wrinkles and decrease the gravity of those not so fine lines (13).

To use, scoop the required amount and apply to dampened body in circular motions until most of the sugar crystals dissolve, focusing on rough areas such as elbows, knees, and heels. Rinse and follow with moisturizer.. The polish is crumbly, so to avoid spillage, I add a little water to make it more of a paste like consistency. This scrub however is not appropriate for delicate facial skin.
